Needles. Procedures. Unfamiliar equipment. Experiences that can be frightening and anxiety provoking, especially for a child.

Medical Play can help children better understand what they will experience, giving them an opportunity to explore medical equipment and ask questions.

Through your generous support, our mission helps equip Child Life Specialists at the Children`s Cancer Center at Upstate Golisano Children`s Hospital with tools and resources to help children face their experience with better understanding.

This day is as much about awareness as it is receiving contributions for us. Many people aren`t fully aware of just how far our mission reaches.

When a family is facing a childhood cancer, household expenses almost always increase. There is the cost of gas for travel to frequent appointments, meals on-the-go, household bills that don`t stop, medical expenses and more... all while one caregiver will likely to stop working to care for the sick child.

The sheer distance traveled by families to Upstate Golisano Children`s Hospital from the Mohawk Valley Region means even greater financial impact.

It is with great honor that our Executive Director joined this evening’sCommon Council Meeting in Fulton, NY, to accept the City of Fulton Proclamation for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, at Mayor Rice’s invitation.

In his proclamation the Mayor encourages all residents of the City of Fulton to show support by wearing gold pins, participating in community events and supporting efforts to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research and treatment.

In addition to this important proclamation, the City of Fulton Police will be wearing gold pins throughout the month in a show of support.

We are incredibly grateful for these gestures which help elevate our work to the benefit of the children and families we serve.

This was a meaningful way to cap the first day of such an important month.

Lynda will be hosting an E-Motion Info session on Aug 15th at 10:30 AM at the Fayetteville Free Library.

The E-Motion Movement Community is a free, 8-week, in-person experience for people living with life-disrupting loss. It combines movement; walking, hiking, and/or running, with intentional grief support, held in community with others who get it. As a group, you`ll work toward a shared distance goal over the 8 weeks. The distance and pace do not matter. What matters is working toward the goal together. Each group includes 10–20 grievers and is guided by a trained E-Motion Facilitator.

The E-Motion Movement Community believes that movement is medicine, community is everything and that no one should have to grieve alone.

Congratulations to our longtime volunteer Tony Martin on receiving a Gold Seal Award from the Onondaga County Legislature in recognizing his many years of dedicated service to our community. Tony has been instrumental in the growth of our mission over the years and we consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to be among the numerous causes that he gives so selflessly to.

You were an artist, a dancer, a singer and wise far beyond your years. Most of all, you were a beautiful light in this world, such a kind, compassionate, deeply loving child.

Halloween is one of the best times of year for many children. It is a time when they get to dress in costume and go out with family and friends to collect all the goodies their bucket will hold.

For young David Ingram Jr., this past Halloween hit much differently. On this day he heard the words that no child should have to hear: “You have cancer.”

Like many children do, especially those who are school-age, young David had appeared to be struggling with a persistent stomach bug. He was able to attend school, participate in Halloween festivities and even playing in his first hockey game! All the while being plagued with bouts of nausea and pain. Then the day came that it became so unbearable he was not even interested in eating. A trip to urgent care uncovered a mass which led him to Upstate Golisano Children`s Hospital where he received a diagnosis of Stage 3 Burkitts Lymphoma.

David spent the next serval months enduring aggressive treatment to treat the disease, much of which kept him inpatient at the hospital. This meant he was away from things he loved, such as his younger brother, friends, beloved golden retriever and hockey community. That very community however, along with local fire, EMT and police forces rallied with him and his family in addition to local businesses and nonprofit organizations such as ours.

On January 19 of this year, David rang the bell!

Today, David and his family are giving back to the organizations that helped carry them through one of life`s hardest journeys. Their gratitude is inspiring and we are truly honored to have been a small part of their story. To read more: paigesccf.org/stories/david
